Biology Department

The Natural Science Division consists of the departments of biology, chemistry, and physics.  All of the sciences are housed in Barnes Science Hall.  The science program is able to offer a wide range of courses and programs which provide an excellent foundation for a variety of careers in science. All lectures and laboratory sections for science majors are taught by full-time professors with doctorate degrees in their appropriate area of expertise. The commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching in the biology department is demonstrated by previous grant awards for instructional equipment provided by the National ScienceChemistry Department Foundation and awards from the Lilly Endowment Inc. for course preparation. Additionally, several of the science faculty members have received the Franklin College Teaching Excellence Award and the Dietz Award for Faculty Excellence. This dedication to quality undergraduate education has translated into considerable success for our graduates. For example, during the past 27 years, 82 percent of the Franklin College pre-medical students who applied to medical school were admitted. This success has been recognized by the Johnson County Medical Society which said, "Franklin College pre-medical students have, over the years, consistently maintained one of the highest rates of acceptance in the nation."
