BIOLOGY 140-CELL BIOLOGY
Cell
Biology is the second semester in the two semester sequence that
introduces the student to the basic principles of biology
(the first course in this sequence is Bio 134-Principles of
Biology). Basic principles of cell biology will be discussed using
representative
examples from both the plant and animal kingdom. The material covered
in this course will serve as an important foundation for
topics covered in many of the upper division biology courses in our
curriculum. Critical thinking, analysis of data and problem
solving will be stressed in the course. The course is divided into three
1-hour lectures, one 2-hour lab period, and one 1-hour lab recitation
session per week.
Although lab topics have been designed to reinforce concepts covered in
lecture, the lab work will usually be done after the
material is covered in lecture. Lab work will include specific lab
hand-ins from the lab manual that must be completed following
the laboratory period. These may be collected and graded. One formal
lab report will also be completed during the course of
the semester.
